FAQs regarding this service

An uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common bacterial infection that affects the urinary system, typically involving the bladder and urethra. It occurs when bacteria, most often Escherichia coli (E. coli), enter the urinary tract and multiply, leading to inflammation and discomfort.

Uncomplicated UTIs are referred to as “uncomplicated” because they occur in otherwise healthy individuals with no structural or functional abnormalities of the urinary tract, and they typically respond well to standard treatment.

We offer a 3-day course of Nitrofurantoin, a common antibiotic treatment prescribed for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). It works by targeting the bacteria in the urinary tract, stopping their growth, and helping to resolve the infection.

How is it Taken?

  • Dosage: Typically, 100 mg taken twice daily for 3 days.
  • Instructions: Take the medication with food to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset. Drink plenty of water to help flush the bacteria from your system.

Why 3 days?

A 3-day course is often sufficient for uncomplicated UTIs in most adults, providing effective treatment while minimising the risk of side effects and antibiotic resistance

Your eligibility will depend on your answers to the questionnaire above. A brief guide regarding eligibiltiy is shown below:

  • Are a non-pregnant female adult with symptoms of an uncomplicated UTI.
  • Have no history of complicated or recurrent UTIs.
  • Do not have significant kidney disease (as reduced kidney function can impair the effectiveness of Nitrofurantoin).
  • Are not allergic to Nitrofurantoin or similar medications.
  • Have no symptoms of upper urinary tract involvement, such as fever, back pain, or chills, which might indicate a kidney infection (pyelonephritis).

All treatments can have side effects, common side effects include: Nausea, vomiting or Diarrhoea.

If you begin to feel unwell during treatment, you must stop taking the medication and discuss with your GP or our clinical team.

Considering the nature of the condition, we will arrange a clinical review of your questionnaire within 6 hours of submission and you will be notified of the outcome.
