The medications are called GLP-1 medications. They work by mimicking the action of a naturally occurring hormone in the body GLP-1. This GLP-1 is a hormone that plays a role in appetite regulation and insulin secretion.

Mounjaro and Wegovy are medications that act like these natural hormones to help with weight loss. Both medications copy the GLP-1 hormone, but Mounjaro also copies another hormone called GIP. GIP helps control blood sugar and how our bodies store fat.

Because Mounjaro mimics both GLP-1 and GIP, it’s thought to be more effective than Wegovy, which only mimics GLP-1. Both medications can help you feel less hungry, eat less, and manage your blood sugar, but clinical studies have shown that Mounjaro may lead to greater weight loss overall.

When you first start taking a GLP-1 weight loss medication like Wegovy or Mounjaro you may start to notice in your appetite within the first few weeks. After that you can start losing weight quickly, at 12 weeks you should expect to see a weight loss of at least 5% of your initial body weight.

The effectiveness is also determined by your diet and level of exercise being undertaken alongside the treatment.

They will discuss your goals for treatment and the reasons for your weight gain. They can also arrange further blood testing if indicated.

As these medications have only recently become available in the UK, you will be closely monitored by our doctors to ensure your safety and peace of mind. At each review the doctor will monitor your weight, check any side effects and review the dosage of the medication. We also have a dedicated admin team who you can contact at any time if you experience side effects and they will arrange a call back by one of our GPs. 

Side effects can occur when taking these medications. The most common include gastro-intestinal effects including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain. Other common effects include: Headache, tiredness, indigestion, dizziness. Injection site reactions.

More serious side effects include: Pancreatitis/ gallstones/ gallbladder inflammation (severe abdominal pains)  Anaphylaxis or worsening of kidney function, (especially in patients with pre-existing kidney conditions). Risk of thyroid C-cell tumors (based on animal studies). Symptoms include a lump in the neck, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or shortness of breath. Low blood sugar particularly when used with other diabetes medications.
